A few minutes ago here in a remote area of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia, which is normally one of the most peaceful places I've ever been in my life, four fighter jets flew over, one immediately after the other and two of them barely clearing the woods right behind my home, they are that close to the ground.
You can sense them coming before they arrive and I was out at the compost pile when I felt that upcoming arrival so I headed towards the house where I knew my Aussie Shepherd/husky dog Bella would soon be running towards me to receive (and also give)comfort.
When the sound from those jets hits you it's like the sound itself is just crushing your body to the ground and there's no resisting. My body instinctively curls into a fetal shape as Bella and I hold onto each other and immediately huge sobs begin to spurt out of me which I then immediately dampen because it puts too much responsibility on Bella to care for me when what she really wants is to know that she's safe.
Now in the house rocking and rocking trying to breathe and finally able to fully cry since Bella has gone back outside to lie on the grass and do her comforting licking of herself and all I can think right now is "Why this? Why this?" We apparently have enough resources to build these fighter jets and to fly them pretty constantly because they fly over my home now about once a week, sometimes twice, and this is up in frequency a lot the past few months. We don't have enough money apparently to feed people or provide shelter for those who need it or take care of people's health or to learn how to better be in relationship with and tend our only planet who nourishes us. But we always have enough money for War. Always. The War spirit continues to rule.
The insanity of how we live and how we think things have to be is absolutely shocking and excruciating, even when the jets overhead aren't dropping bombs. But they are made to and those of us who continue to live in presently more safe places need to remember; ...... they are made to.
